Diamonds are remarkable creations of nature. They hold great historical, cultural, and financial value across civilizations.

The Greeks considered the diamond the king of all gems and named it Adamas, meaning indestructible or invincible.

However, over time, many myths about diamonds have circulated. Today, we are here to debunk them.

Presenting diamond myths busted!

Myth #1 – Diamonds are the Hardest Known Natural Substance

Scientists recently discovered that two natural substances are even harder than diamonds.

Experiments at Shanghai Jiao Tong University showed that wurtzite boron nitride (w-BN) has a structure similar to diamond. It can withstand up to 18 times more stress under high pressure.

The second material, Lonsdaleite, forms when meteorites hit Earth. The extreme pressure during impact creates a crystal structure that can handle 58 times more stress than a natural diamond.

Myth #2 – Diamonds Cannot be Damaged

Although diamonds are extremely hard, they are not indestructible.

Diamonds can chip or scratch if handled carelessly. They may also lose shine when exposed repeatedly to oil, grease, or intense sunlight.

So, don’t panic — but stay careful.

Here are a few tips to maintain your diamonds easily at home like a pro.

Myth #3 – Diamonds are Found Only on Earth

Diamonds do not exist only on Earth. Other planets in our solar system also have the conditions needed to form them.

Scientists believe that lightning storms on gas giants turn methane into carbon. As a result, it may literally rain diamonds on Jupiter and Saturn.

Myth #4 – Diamond Production is not Sustainable

Modern technology has transformed natural diamond mining.

Today, companies use advanced machinery and Artificial Intelligence to reduce carbon footprints. They rely on drone surveillance, accurate mapping systems, and geological tracking robots to improve efficiency and sustainability.

Furthermore, the Kimberley Process has helped eliminate conflict diamonds from global trade. Today, more than 98% of natural diamonds in the market are conflict-free.

Myth #5 – When it Comes to Diamonds, Bigger is Always Better

Size matters, but it is not everything. The true value of a natural diamond depends on the 4Cs: cut, color, clarity, and carat weight.

In fact, smaller diamonds can be more valuable if they have ideal proportions and excellent clarity. A diamond’s brilliance depends on how it reflects light, not just its size.

Myth #6 – Clear White Diamonds are the Most Expensive

Many people believe white diamonds are the most expensive. However, rarity determines value.

Natural diamonds appear in many colors. The rarer the color, the higher the price.

Did You Know?

The largest natural red diamond ever sold weighed 5.11 carats. It was purchased for $8 million — that’s $1.6 million per carat.

Myth #7 – Diamonds are not Flexible

Diamonds may not seem flexible, but researchers have found ways to bend nanoscale diamonds.

Nano-needle diamonds can stretch up to 9%, far beyond the industrial standard of 1%.

This breakthrough has contributed to advances in cancer treatment technology by helping deliver medicine directly into cancer cells.

Myth #8 – Diamonds are Always Very Costly

Many people associate diamonds with extreme wealth. However, prices vary widely depending on quality and sourcing.

If you buy directly from trusted manufacturers who source from leading mining companies, you can find excellent diamonds at fair prices.
