Know the difference – EGL vs GIA diamonds

When buying a raw diamond, most people focus on the 4Cs – color, cut, clarity, and carat. However, another critical factor often gets ignored: certification.

Certification proves the authenticity and quality of a diamond before and after it is cut and polished. Without proper documentation, you rely only on the seller’s claim.

A diamond can fall into one of these categories:

  • • Non-certified diamond
  • • Self-certified diamond
  • • Third-party certified diamond

While all options are available in the market, certified diamonds offer verified proof of grading and quality.

Why Raw Diamond Certification Matters

A diamond certificate is an official grading report issued by a recognized gemological laboratory. It includes details about the 4Cs, inclusions, proportions, and other important characteristics.

Labs such as GIA, EGL, IGI, HRD, GSI, GSL, and NGTC evaluate each raw diamond using defined grading standards.

Because price depends on quality, certification directly impacts value. Therefore, choosing a certified stone protects your investment.

GIA vs EGL Certification Explained

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1931. It developed the 4Cs grading system and remains the global authority in diamond grading.

GIA follows strict grading standards. Multiple experts examine each diamond before issuing a report.

Raw diamond grading and GIA certification process

In contrast, European Gemological Laboratories (EGL) began operations in 1977. EGL introduced the SI3 clarity grade and focuses on commercial grading services.

However, grading standards may vary between labs. As a result, the same raw diamond can receive different grades from different laboratories.

1. Accuracy

GIA reports are known for strict evaluation and consistency. Several gemologists assess each stone before final approval.

EGL grading is often considered more lenient. Therefore, results may appear slightly higher compared to GIA grading.

2. Cost

EGL certification costs less than GIA certification. Because of this, EGL-graded diamonds usually sell at lower prices.

GIA certification costs more due to its strict process and global reputation.

3. Process & Convenience

GIA follows detailed guidelines and strict procedures. The process takes longer but ensures accuracy.

EGL offers a faster and simpler process. This makes it convenient for some manufacturers.

Which Certification Is Better for a Raw Diamond?

Most industry experts consider GIA the most reliable authority in diamond grading. Its reports provide confidence in pricing and resale value.

However, buyers with budget limitations may consider EGL diamonds from trusted brands.
