The allure of diamonds has captivated humanity for centuries. In today’s world, concerns about ethical and environmental responsibility increasingly intertwine with their beauty. With the ever-evolving landscape of the diamond industry, we’ve seen the growing importance of sustainability and sustainable natural diamonds.

What is the Importance of Sustainability in the Diamond Industry?

Sustainability in the diamond industry is not just a buzzword. It’s a fundamental transformation of an industry known for its complex supply chains and potential ethical and environmental issues.

Buyers today are more conscious than ever. They expect transparency and ethical sourcing. Sustainability is necessary for the diamond industry to thrive in the 21st century.

The diamond industry, like many others, has faced scrutiny over the years due to concerns about the origin and impact of these precious gemstones. The public’s increasing awareness of the potential harm associated with diamond mining has prompted a significant shift towards more responsible practices.

What Are Sustainable Natural Diamonds?

Sustainable natural diamonds, often referred to as ethically sourced or conflict-free diamonds, are mined and sourced with a commitment to social and environmental responsibility.

These diamonds produce a minimal negative environmental impact and ensure fair labour practices, benefiting local communities and economies.

They are sourced in a way that respects the environment and the people involved in the process. This means supporting fair wages, safe working conditions, and community development in regions where diamonds are mined.

Ethical Practices in Diamond Sourcing

Ethical practices in diamond sourcing involve adhering to strict guidelines. It is to ensure that diamonds are mined and processed without infringing on human rights or contributing to conflict.

Ethical Practices in Diamond Sourcing

The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme has established initiatives to prevent the trade of conflict diamonds. By supporting these ethical practices, buyers can rest assured that their diamond purchases do not contribute to human suffering or conflict. It’s a way to ensure that your beloved jewellery has a positive impact on the world.

The Environmental Aspect of Sustainability

The diamond industry has a significant environmental footprint. If not conducted responsibly, the mining process can lead to deforestation, water pollution, and habitat destruction.

Environmental Aspect of Diamond Sustainability

Sustainable practices focus on minimising these impacts, including responsible land reclamation, water conservation, and reducing carbon emissions. By choosing sustainable natural diamonds, we consciously support practices that protect fragile ecosystems and ensure a more sustainable future.

Responsible Choices When Buying Diamonds

As a consumer, you can make a difference by buying sustainable natural diamonds. Look for diamonds with certifications or a clear and transparent supply chain.

Buying Certified Diamonds

Your purchasing decisions are pivotal in encouraging the diamond industry to adopt more responsible practices. By seeking out certified diamonds, you are signalling to the market that sustainability matters.

The Future of Sustainable Natural Diamonds

The future of sustainability in the diamond industry is bright. As technology advances and consumer awareness grows, companies will source and process more diamonds with sustainability in mind.

The industry is moving towards more transparency, and companies that embrace ethical and environmental responsibility will likely thrive in the long run.

The ongoing shift toward sustainability is a fundamental transformation. It reflects changing consumer values and the industry’s commitment to a more responsible future.

Mumbai, India – Hari Krishna Group, a leading diamond and jewellery manufacturing company, has joined the Watches & Jewellery Initiatives 2030 (WJI 2030), a global sustainability initiative launched by Kering and Cartier in 2021.

Aims of WJI in 2030

WJI 2030 aims to improve sustainability in three areas: building climate resilience, preserving resources, and fostering inclusiveness, and is guided by the Ten Principles of the United Nations Global Compact and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

The Hari Krishna Group’s participation in the WJI 2030 initiative is a reflection of its strong commitment to social responsibility and environmental conservation, which it champions through the Dholakia Foundation – philanthropic arm of Hari Krishna Group.

The Foundation has undertaken various initiatives, including planting over 2.5 million trees and constructing

125 lakes across Gujarat and India as part of the #Mission100Sarovar initiative. These efforts have significantly increased the water source in nearby villages, leading to the resurgence of wildlife and the resolution of water scarcity in over 100 villages. With a total water capacity of 7 billion litres, these lakes have allowed farmers to cultivate up to three crops annually.

The Hari Krishna Group’s unwavering commitment to sustainability and the environment has set a positive example for others to follow, and they continue to be a driving force towards positive change. Notably, their efforts to preserve resources align with the pillar of the same name in the WJI 2030 initiative, making them a valuable partner in this collective endeavour, and Hari Krishna Group can take the lead in this pillar.

Hari Krishna Group joins other luxury watchmakers and jewellery brands such as Lange & Söhne, IWC Schaffhausen, Jaeger-Lecoultre, Panerai, Piaget, Dimexon, Mattioli, Pandora, Rubel & Ménasché, in addition to existing members such as Cartier, Kering (Boucheron, Gucci Watches, Pomellato, Dodo, Qeelin), Chanel Horlogerie Joaillerie, Montblanc, Rosy Blue, and Swarovski in the WJI 2030 initiative.

What Iris Van Der Vaken Said

Iris Van der Veken, executive director and secretary general of the WJI 2030, said, We welcome HK to the Watch & Jewellery Initiative 2030. The time is now to accelerate efforts towards the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Action matters, and we look forward to their active participation and engagement in implementing our 3 core pillars on climate action, preserving resources and inclusiveness.

By collaborating with other industry leaders and supporting the WJI 2030 initiative, we aim to significantly and positively impact our industry and society as a whole. Together, we will strive to create a more inclusive, resilient, and responsible watches and jewellery industry. We are excited about the opportunities that lie ahead and remain dedicated to upholding the highest standards of sustainability, social responsibility, and innovation.

In a remarkable gesture of support for the Watches & Jewellery Initiatives 2030, the Dholakia Foundation organised the UN 2023 Water Conference Gala Dinner as an outside event during the UN 2023 Water Conference. During this prestigious occasion, the Hari Krishna Group dedicated a lake in the name of Watches & Jewellery Initiatives 2030, symbolising their deep commitment to the cause and the collaboration.

The dedication of the lake signifies the Hari Krishna Group’s profound belief in the power of collaboration and the transformative impact that can be achieved through sustainable practices in the watches and jewellery industry.
